Earwax Removal

Hearing Loss or Just Earwax?

Earwax build-ups can significantly affect your hearing. Home remedies for earwax re-moval can be unsafe, ineffective, and may even make the situation worse. Therefore, it’s important to see your hearing care professional.

What is Earwax?

Earwax is the body’s natural way of cleaning your ear canals of dead skin and dust. It isn’t actually wax at all but a water-soluble substance made from secretions in your ear canal, dust from the air, and dead skin cells. This mixture usually moves out of the ear naturally as you talk, eat, or drink throughout the day. It typically dries out and falls away without you even noticing. However, hearing aids and other obstructions can impede this pro-cess, requiring intervention.

Symptoms of Impacted Earwax

If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, we recommend seeing us for ear-wax removal:

  • Earache
  • Feeling like your ear is blocked
  • Sounds becoming muffled, which may get progressively worse
  • Tinnitus (ringing in your ear)
  • Itchy ears, odor, or ear discharge
  • Coughing
  • If you wear hearing aids, you might hear them whistling, or it might feel like they aren’t working properly.

Microsuction

Our clinicians are equipped and trained to use ENT surgical-grade microscopes, which provide a magnified view deep into the ear canal. Combined with a specialist medical-grade micro-suction machine, this allows for the safe and painless removal of deep and/or stubborn earwax.

Don't Push Anything Into Your Ear Canal

The biggest cause of earwax build-up is people trying to clean their own ears. Earwax gets pushed further into the canal and packed against the eardrum, making it difficult for your ears to clear it naturally. So, please don’t push cotton q-tips, pen lids, or bobby pins into your ears!
